When a client brings us a 710-horsepower monster like the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, the priority is clear: this vehicle needs protection that matches its performance. At Audio Lab, we know that high-performance SUVs are magnets for speed enforcement, and a standard windshield-mounted detector with a dangling power cord just doesn’t cut it for a vehicle of this caliber.
For this project, our goal was to engineer a complete countermeasure package that offers maximum protection while maintaining a showroom-quality aesthetic. We combined a high-performance portable radar detector with the Escort ZR6 Laser Shifter system, creating a “stealth” defense suite that looks like it came straight from the factory.
The Challenge: Integration vs. Modification
The Durango Hellcat features an aggressive, complex front fascia with a honeycomb grille structure. The challenge with any laser defense installation is placing the “shifter” heads in a position where they have a clear, unobstructed view of the road (to detect and jam laser signals) without disrupting the vehicle’s menacing lines.
Phase 1: The Clean Wire Radar Setup
We started by addressing the radar detector, the Escort Redline 360c. While portable units offer great range, the standard cigarette lighter plug is unsightly and occupies a valuable power port.
Hardwired Power: We located a switched ignition source at the fuse panel and created a custom fused circuit. This allows the detector to power up and down automatically with the vehicle.
Hidden Routing: All wiring was routed behind the A-pillar trim and headliner, terminating exactly at the mount point. The result is a floating detector look with zero visible wires cluttering the dashboard.
Phase 2: Escort ZR6 Laser Defense Integration
Radar detectors are excellent for situational awareness, but they cannot passively block a LIDAR (Laser) gun. For that, we installed the Escort ZR6 Laser Shifter system.
Strategic Placement: We custom-mounted the ZR6 shifter heads directly into the Hellcat’s upper grille. This positioning provides optimal coverage for the center mass and headlights—the two most common target points for police laser.
Factory-Style Finish: Instead of using generic brackets that stick out, we integrated the sensors into the honeycomb mesh. As you can see in the photos, the sensors blend seamlessly into the black grille elements. They are almost invisible until you are looking for them, yet they retain perfect line-of-sight for maximum jamming efficiency.
Engine Bay Management: We loomed and routed the cabling through the engine bay, penetrating the firewall through a factory grommet to ensure a waterproof seal. The control module is tucked away inside the cabin, accessible but hidden.
